Reading Tarot for America

The Moon

In this short period of time on the Wheel of the Year when we move into darkness, between Samhein and Yule, it’s customary for Witches to move inward, engage in introspection, do all of those things that this INTJ loves with all of her heart. I firmly believe that in a culture based upon patriarchy, on a maniacal emphasis on continued bodily existence, rather than death, mind, rather than body, words, rather than feelings, and logic, rather than gnosis, everything and anything that we can do to move away from partiarchy, to move into the dark, the body, feelings, and gnosis is a deeply political act.

Joanna Colbert, the artist behind the Gaian Tarot, has created a Tarot spread that is, I believe, a powerful tool for this sort of political action. I thought that, here on the day after an historic election, I’d do this Tarot working for America, for Columbia’s country.

1. Offering: What or who is dead or dying, that you need to honor?

Six of Air. “You are gaining clarity by spending time with others of like mind.”

2. Challenge: What task does the Elder of Fire ask of you?

Ace of Water. “It’s time to follow your heart’s desire, instincts, and intuition.”

3. Center: Where do you find your center of power?

Nine of Earth. “You’re enjoying a time of accomplishment and comfort.”

4. Opening: What new sweetness is wafting in on the scent of burning herbs?

The Moon. “Learning to trust one’s intuition.”

5. Wisdom: What secrets do the ancestors whisper to you during this season of All Hallows?

Ten of Fire. “Does it feel like your dreams have gone up in smoke? Are you overwhelmed or burdened by loss?” Remember that new seedlings grow and flourish in the ashes of a spent fire.”

Let’s spend some time together seeing if we can piece together what that means for America. Can you do this Tarot spread for yourself? Post the results in comments and let’s all apply our collective intuition to those readings.

  1. Dear Hecate,
I’m a member of Joanna Powell Colbert’s Gaian Tarot Circle. I’ve posted your link in the forum there. Thank you for sharing Joanna’s work with the greater blogosphere — this is fantastic spread.

  2. I somewhat inadvertently threw a spread before on election night just before the returns started coming in. The deck was cold so I was warming it up by holding it between my legs. I forgot about it and got up to do something. Didn’t notice they dropped until I came back to the computer. Five cards were visibly face up on the floor. In the order I found them, Temperance, Four of Wands, The Magician, The Hermit, and The Lovers.

I leave it to you to your greater skills to interpret the meaning. I’d note that I was warming the cards up with the express intent to do a reading for the election.

  3. Notable about Columbia read: All four elements represented. Range of 1-10 shows where in the waxing/waning cycle, mostly environmentally. Fire could be the passing of the drought (a 10), a new cycle of the harvest with whatever seeds remain. Earth (9), several shakeups in the plates, expect some more major movements before a new cycle begins. Air (6) is ramping up to a 10. Lots still up in the air. Has yet to settle. Impacts becoming undeniable now. Ace of Water (1), we’re just at the beginning of a new cycle, a new watermark. Take heed. Moon is the sweetness wafting. Very good indicator. Currents, currency will be transformed, redefined. Water can carry boulders over seawalls.

Notable about Election read: First two cards are the current pulse. Temperance and 4W. Last cycle was: Want to remove the wall between the front of the house and the back? Go ahead. Want to see what happens with socialism for the wealthy and capitalism for the rest? Go ahead. Want to see what happens when some are left in legal limbo for the sake of questionable enterprise(s)? Go ahead. And so on. That part of the iteration has been allowed to play out. Ore slag burned off. Now 4W says those results are in. Proof. Pudding. Build from the ground upon which we now find ourselves. The latter three cards will be the sources of Generativity from here on out (of the hologram): The Magician (Tesla), The Hermit (Scholar goes to Congress), and The Lovers (Creativity without Convolution and Collateral damage), all of whom will be valued for their unique contributions, without (wastefully) attempting to make them over in another’s image.

  4. My Fantastial Creatures Deck came to hand.

    1. Offering: What or who is dead or dying, that you need to honor?

The Empress (The Morrigan) Fertility, creativity, joy and prosperity. Love, harmony, also emotional manipulation. Seek the center where true knowledge is found. What the Lady begins, she can end.

    2. Challenge: What task does the Elder of Fire ask of you?

Four of Cups (Tiamat) Discontent. Something important is missing. Withdraw, create a quiet space.

    3. Center: Where do you find your center of power?

Judgement. (Eastern and Western Dragons) A time of change requires thought, patience and persistance,

    4. Opening: What new sweetness is wafting in on the scent of burning herbs?

Three of Pentacles (Hobgoblin) Opportunity to learn new skills. Chance to do master-work

    5. Wisdom: What secrets do the ancestors whisper to you during this season of All Hallows?

King of Wands (Oberon) Moving forward with plans. Making good business decisions. Protection and strength.Security and abundance

  5. Hello, Hecate. I follow your blog and often refer to it, because you post such wonderful poetry and images. I don’t think I ever commented before, but I was inspired by this post and determined to join in although it took me awhile. I love the Gaian Tarot, and here’s what it spoke to me today.

Offering: who or what is dead or dying?
    Five of Water
What this said to me is that the time for feeling alienated, giving way to despondency, sitting out, has passed.

    Ten of Water
What struck me first was the dead and rotting carcasses in the foreground. Salmon: wealth of the people, given by the earth. The challenge is not to let it be wasted, not to let it rot. Top of the cycle, as all things come round again. Our challenge is to turn the wheel into true abundance, not sink into waste and decay. This strongly speaks to concern for the earth as well as for industrially produced wealth. “You may identify with the courage of the salmon, whose struggle benefits the whole ecosystem as well as the next generation of salmon. How are you willing to struggle to improve the future for your family or community?”

    Eight of Air
The only card in this spread that wasn’t Water! Taking thought together, taking action, teaching, learning, deciding. “It may be a struggle to co-create a vision with others, and it may be hard on the individual ego to reach consensus in a group. But oh, the rewards!” I don’t think we could have a clearer message for this year’s political situation.

    Three of Water
The possibility of joy. In this moment, the otters are neither predators nor prey. They are playing together in the flow of the moment. “It’s time to seek joy in your life and share it with others.” Perhaps, to seek growth as abundance and flow rather than competition and domination? Again, the natural world as our element, our support, that in which we live and move and have our being.

    Ace of Water
From the Ten round to the Ace. Holy wisdom, always beginning. The secret whispered to Baldur? “Rebirth.” Be ready to begin again. The salmon is wealth, wisdom and homecoming, both to the indigenous people of the northwest and to my Celtic people from which I come. The salmon is telling me this is my place on Earth, and if I destroy it, I will have no other. Tend to your own watershed! Look there for wisdom.

Why so much Water? I don’t know, except for the vision of Water as that which binds one place together. This America is a place of waters. My part of it is Michigan, surrounded by the Great Lakes, veined through and through with rivers and ponds. Blue life running through us, letting us know all actions will be felt throughout those veins. Be like water–always ready to go lower–yet sooner or later, invincible.

Those are just my immediate thoughts. Maybe you’ll have a better interpretation.
