women-history
friendship among women

~ Susan Hawthorne

It is said
that Salome gave great gifts
of land to Livia
that wealth creates more wealth
and power the same
it was in friendship that these gifts
were given
what we hear is only the nastiness
of Livia
and Salome’s naked dance

at the party Cleopatra
bearded Hatshepsut
and the marvelous Queen of Sheba
who in Rome
has a church called San Saba
her names
are numerous and varied
Balquis Nakuti Malkeda
Oloye Bilikisu Sungbo say the Yoruba

Dido is singing her way through
the latest
operatic version of her disastrous
love
Boudicca charges in on her horse apologizing for
being late
it’s a long way from the Apple Isle
she chides

though they be mere mortals
these women
are equal in character to gods
they led peoples
had the faults of humans
they change
history they challenged the order
of things

  1. Hecate,

I’d like to invite you to join us as an author in Alexandria, either as an occasional guest author or as a fully privileged Resident Author.

    www aleksandreia com

Alexandria might also be the perfect place in which to write about issues and interests which may not yet be an ideal fit for your current blog.

If you think you might be interested in becoming a Resident Author, let me know and I’ll forward our formal invitations for you to look over and return, if you decide to proceed.

I look forward to hearing from you

  2. Dear H.M. Stuart,

Thank you so much for the very flattering invitation. Anytime that anyone likes my writing, I’m tickled. I wish that I had the time to write for your blog, but, at least for now, I’m swamped at my job and hardly able to write regularly here. Perhaps someday when I retire . . . .
