  1. I loved Fortune’s “Letters” … dark days and bright deeds! I firmly believe the “temple” they constructed is still there.

  2. Red Emma Speaks, a collection of Emma Goldman’s essays, is a favorite of mine.

  3. I’ve been working my way through The Collected Essays of James Baldwin lately, which has been like a balm to my soul.

The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt. The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Any of Martin Luther King’s writings. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. 1984 and Animal Farm. Brave New World. Robin Morgan’s Going Too Far. Gynecology. David Brock’s Blinded By The Right. Queer in America by Michelangelo Signorelli. Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish. Power and Powerlessness by John Gaventa. Marilyn French’s Beyond Power. Anything by Jonathan Kozol.

  4. Bob Altemeyer: The Authoritarians.

  5. I’ve been reading and rereading Baldwin over the last year or so. Ta-Nehisi Coates sent me back in time, or maybe forward. Octavia Butler’s Parable novels for sure. Joanna Russ’s The Female Man. Suzy McKee Charnas’s Holdfast Chronicles. Bernice Johnson Reagon’s speech/essay “Coalition Politics: Turning the Century.”

  6. The Chalice and the Blade by Riane Eisler
