Could It Be…Sexism?

Earlier this week, the Washington Post put an ass-kissing puff piece about Karen and Mike Pence on the front goddamn page. (And this may be the only time I’ll ever write this about anything that’s not Wonkette, but read the comments. Really.)

Yes, this annoys me, but not as much as this quote from the piece:

In 2002, Mike Pence told the Hill that he never eats alone with a woman other than his wife and that he won’t attend events featuring alcohol without her by his side, either.

It’s a small thing, right? And gee willikers, isn’t it admirable that he takes such careful measures to avoid even the appearance of impropriety?

Uh, no.

It’s part of the ridiculous, insidious sexism that infuses conservative patriarchal religions of ALL stripes.

Us ladies are just so tempting that men become wild beasts who can’t control themselves around us if they’re left alone with us for a single second, dontcha know?

One, this is highly insulting to men, and I would say, “I don’t know why more of them don’t get angry about that” except for the fact that I totally DO know why they don’t care.

Because it automatically excludes all women from all positions of power or responsibility.

Allow me to quote Mother Jones editor-in-chief Clara Jeffrey‘s excellent tweetstorm on the topic:

This whole approach is absolutely common in Christian/Catholic/Jewish/Muslim worlds.

I remember as a kid my mother proudly reporting to me that my engineer father refused to go on a business trip with a fellow engineer who happened to be a woman. This was supposedly proof of his strong moral fiber and something to be admired.

Guess who went on the trip? Guess who DIDN’T go on the trip?

At the time, I didn’t have the tools to deconstruct what that was going to do to that woman’s career, but I’d bet the mortgage payment it didn’t help her advance.

As the wise and fabulous Hecate has been known to observe, some of the Trumpkins will be going to “tennis prison” and some of them will be going to real prison. But for anyone who thinks that Mike Pence will be an improvement when that happens, think again. He may not come out and talk about grabbing pussies, but his opinion that women fall somewhere between mentally slow child and beloved pet is EXACTLY the same as his boss’s and lead to the exact same place: a roomful of white men voting to gut women’s rights.

  4. Thank you for another excellent post Hecate. When I practiced in big law the menfolk would go on golf outings that also included strip clubs. Female attorneys not invited – not that we’d want to go. They would schedule firm outings at country clubs that had special lounges that would not allow women in them. I was one of the women at the event who tested this rule. We were not allowed entry. At an event paid for by my employer that was meant to help us socialize and presumably advance our careers. That was 20+ years ago. I can’t believe shit is being celebrated. the more things change the more they stay the same.

  5. But when women do not want to be alone with men, then men do complain! Oh, and how they complain! Then they suddenly feel it is insulting that a woman would even think of them as POTENTIAL rapists. Not as dumb animals who lose control when they are alone with a woman, even. No, just as men who might make a decision to rape.

    Interesting, is it not?
