Thank you so much to everyone who has been doing these workings. If you’re just joining us, you may want to go back through some of the early posts about this project in order to orient yourself. Now’s probably a good time to remind everyone to check/refresh the wards on your home or wherever you do this work. Be sure that you’re rested, grounded, and in a comfortable position.
Anchor yourself firmly to your landbase. Notice a small detail that will call you back when this working is finished.
Ground and center. Cast a circle.
As you move astrally to our American plain on the astral plane, you can see again the safe hillock where you do your work. You can see the five giant banners, shining in the sky: Walden Pond, the Underground Railroad, the Cowboy, the Salmon, and Lady Liberty. Do they seem more defined since we began our work? Do they have anything special to tell you this week?
Settle yourself on your hillock and look at the banner for the Underground Railroad. Everyone involved — Harriet Tubman and others who led enslaved people to freedom, the people who turned their homes into way-stations, and the people who risked their lives to escape — took big risks. They refused to remain apathetic in the face of an immense and deeply-entrenched evil. They took action.
Stand and slowly walk into the banner for the Underground Railroad. It is night; you are carrying an old-fashioned valise and walking slowly through a humid swamp. All of your senses are alive and you begin to smell a faint whisp of woodsmoke. Follow that, being careful where you step; there are snakes and crocodiles in this swamp, as well as deep bogholes. Gradually, the scent grows stronger and you can see a small group of people, huddled around a tiny fire.
Harriet Tubman senses your presence and she tells the others to stay still while she approaches you. You can feel her searching intellect and you know she is deciding if you are friend or foe. Stand still, be quiet, and wait for her response.
Finally, “What do you want?” she asks.
Thank her for speaking to you. Tell her that America is now ravaged by men who came to power because too many Americans are apathetic, unwilling to even vote, especially in the mid-term elections that determine who runs our Congress and Senate. Hold out your empty valise and ask her how you can bring forward some of the courage and involvement of the Underground Railroad.
Listen carefully to what she tells you. Do any of the other people around the fire have advice for you? Place a stone in your valise for each piece of advice your receive.
After a few minutes, silence returns. Ms. Tubman begins to turn back towards her passengers. “Wait!” you say. You reach into your pocket and find a gift for her. What is it? “Here,” you say, holding out your gift. “Here’s something for you from the future. Good luck on your travels. Thank you for your advice.”
She steps forward and holds out her hand, takes your gift, and nods. She turns to go back and a sudden breeze blows up the smoke and hides everyone. When the smoke clears, they’re gone.
But your work is not done. Turn and walk carefully, because you may well not be the only magic-worker in this swamp and some of the others may not be allies, back through the swamp and out of the banner of the Underground Railroad. Return to the grassy plain. Raise your arm and draw a pentagram over the banner, sealing it so that no enemies may come through.
Walk back to your hillock, carrying your valise.
Settle yourself comfortably on the hillock. Feel your connection to the land. You are a powerful worker of magic and the land, itself, will aid you if you call to it for help. Take the pebbles from your valise. Remember the advice you received with each pebble. Toss each pebble as far as you can, throwing each in a different direction. See the pebbles rolling across America and crushing apathy. See them strengthening the Resistance, which is, of course, only as strong as the resolve of each person in the Resistance. What will you recommit to doing this week?
Return to your own body, your own landbase. Open your eyes. Rub your face, move your arms and legs. Notice the detail you selected to call you back from the astral. Open your circle. Drink some water. If you like, have something to eat, maybe steamed asparagus or some sliced strawberries.
During the course of this week, you may want to visit the bannered prairie several times in order to strengthen its presence on the astral. You may want to repeat this working several times. You may want to place an image of Harriet Tubman on your altar. You may want to journal about it. Are you inspired to make any art? Can you sit beside a warm fire, or light incense, or stare into a candle? What actions are you inspired to take for the Resistance? If you’re willing, please share in comments what happened and how this working.
