Thank you so much to everyone who has been doing these weekly workings. If you’re new, welcome! You may want to go back and read some of the prior posts for background.
The last few weeks have given us some strong reminders of what we’re fighting. Trump’s first foreign trip was a disaster; he kissed up to Patriarchy in Saudi Arabia and the Vatican and insulted our European allies. The sight of the other G7 leaders walking through the streets of an Italian town while Trump trundled along behind in his golf cart was a true metaphor for what is happening in America right now: the rest of the world is leaving us behind while a broken old man drags us further and further into a weakened position. And, then, Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Accord, apparently motivated more by spite than by anything else.
Let’s rededicate ourselves to this magical battle. If you’ve been too busy to do some of the workings, that’s OK. If you prefer to work on Sunday afternoon or Tuesday during your lunch break, that’s fine, too. Magic occurs between the worlds, in that place where each time is all time, and what happens between the worlds, as we Witches say, can change the worlds.
Today, let’s work on strengthening America’s fragile environment.
Now’s probably a good time to remind everyone to check/refresh the wards on your home or wherever you do this work. Be sure that you’re rested, grounded, and in a comfortable position.
Anchor yourself firmly to your landbase. Notice a small detail that will call you back when this working is finished.
Ground and center. Cast a circle.
As you move astrally to our American plain on the astral plane, you can see again the safe hillock where you do your work. You can see the five giant banners, shining in the sky: Walden Pond, the Underground Railroad, the Cowboy, the Salmon, and Lady Liberty. Do they seem more defined since we began our work? Do they have anything special to tell you this week?
As you look at the banners, notice that the Walden Pond banner is getting larger and larger. You stand up and walk into the banner and stand at the quiet edges of Walden Pond in Massachusetts. In 1774, John Chapman, known as Johnny Appleseed, was born in Massachusetts. You can see him, barefoot and carrying a bag of apple seeds, as he starts out from Massachusetts and wanders on through present-day Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, and West Virginia. Johnny Appleseed lived mostly out of doors, walking miles and miles across the country. He was in touch with the natural world around him and did what he could to foster and improve it. Walk with him for a while and see if he has anything to tell you. Is there anything that you want to offer to him? He was known to like jokes, tall tales, and all animals, from horses to mosquitoes.
As Johnny plants small orchards throughout the land, pick up a bit of soil from each spot, bless it by holding it in your dominant hand and drawing a pentacle over it with your other hand. Charge the soil to become full of mycelia that will link all the trees and other plants in the area. Slip most of the dirt into one of the holes Johnny digs for his seeds, but put a little bit from each orchard into your pocket. Be sure to look around you as you follow Johnny across America. As you see the natural beauty all around you, renew your commitment to care for it, to fight its destruction, to do all that you can to help the land to renew itself. At one of the places you and Johnny stop to rest, the Powers, and Spirits, and Beings of the landbase may make themselves known to you. Ask for their help.
Finally, in Indiana, Johnny Appleseed plants a few final apple seeds and then slips back off to the Summerlands. You are alone, but you have a pocketful of soil from all of the different orchards, orchards that are now magically mature and full of ripening apples.
Walk out of the Walden Pond banner, back to the Great Plains. Find your hillock and sit comfortably. Hold in your hand the American soil that you have gathered from orchards that dot the land. Charge the soil to become the ground of a new American dedication to the environment. Lift your hand to the wind and allow it to scatter the charged soil to every corner of the land.
See the charged soil settling where it is needed most. Some of it blows into the halls of power, some of it settles next to the new American heras and heroes who all save the environment. Some finds a resting place where it can quietly change everything. Know that you are a powerful worker of magic, rooted in your very own landbase, working with the strong archetypes of this land, assisted by countless unseen others who labor in league with you. The magical seeds that you plant will grow into strong orchards. The orchards will bear fruit. The fruit will nourish the people and the land.
Return to your own body, your own landbase. Open your eyes. Rub your face, move your arms and legs. Notice the detail you selected to call you back from the astral. Open your circle. Drink something, maybe some cold cider. If you like, have something to eat, maybe a few apple slices spread with peanut butter or some jerky and a biscuit.
During the course of this week, you may want to visit the bannered prairie several times in order to strengthen its presence on the astral. You may want to repeat this working several times. You may want to place an apple or some soil on your altar. You may want to journal about it. Are you inspired to make any art? Can you sit beside a warm fire, or light incense, or stare into a candle? What actions are you inspired to take for the Resistance? If you’re willing, please share in comments what happened and how this working went.
