Now’s probably a good time to remind everyone to check/refresh the wards on your home or wherever you do this work. Be sure that you’re rested, grounded, and in a comfortable position. Maybe wrap up in a blanket or cloak and grasp a stone or talisman that matters to you. Grow your roots, send them deep into the soil, let them intertwine and grow small hairs to attach to the mycelia in your own landbase.
Anchor yourself firmly to your landbase. Notice a small detail that will call you back when this working is finished.
Ground and center. Cast a circle.
As you move to our American plain on the astral plane, you can see again the safe hillock where you do your work. You can see the five giant banners, shining in the sky: Walden Pond, the Underground Railroad, the Cowboy, the Salmon, and Lady Liberty. Do they seem more defined since we began our work? Do they have anything special to tell you this week?
For a few moments, just sit on your hillock and allow yourself to become comfortable. This place should be feeling very real to you by now; we’ve been working together to create it for months and months. What’s become familiar to you? A tuft of prairie grass? Buffalo off in the distance? The scent of sand carried on the wind? You’ve been involved in a months-long magical working here, joined with magic workers from across the globe. Feel your connection to this place on the astral plane. It is always here for you, always a source of strength.
Now, look to Lady Liberty in the north. Her banner begins to grow larger and larger until it fills the entire sky. It becomes three-dimensional and you can fly right into it, up, up, up to the top of Lady Libery’s crown. From there, you can look all across America. What you see is a kind of fog — the ancients may have called it a miasma — the drifts and floats across the country. At some points, it seems to thicken and congeal, completely covering everything beneath it. At other points, it just makes things difficult to see, fuzzes the outlines, covers everything in a grey haze.
You lean down and whisper into Lady Liberty’s ear and ask her: “What is that? What’s that fog all about?”
She responds: “That is the miasma. That is the enchantment of cynicism that makes Americans believe that it’s a sign of intelligence and sophistication to be cynical, to say that nothing you do matters, to imagine that both parties are the same, to aver that there’s no reason to vote. It’s an evil enchantment that allows those in power to stay in power. It’s a form of black magic that gets people to surrender up their own voices.”
As you watch, you see the miasma congeal around the media, that convinces Americans to focus on “the horserace,” or “the optics” or irrelevant issues such as “likability,” rather than on substance. You see the miasma thicken and hide from view the candidate’s actual policy differences. You stand on Liberty’s shoulder and cannot help but see how evil sorcerers weave this miasma in and around people’s own insecurities and fears, how it offers those people an easy way out. They don’t have to risk caring and losing, daring and failing. Instead, they can shrug cynically and say, “Nothing matters, anyway.”
Lady Liberty asks you to place your hand atop Her hand that holds the torch. She asks you to direct strength into Her hand. You and Lady Liberty use Her torch to burn off the fog. Wherever She points Her torch, the miasma burns away and people claim their own power. She points it towards tv studios and radio stations. She shines her torch inside the windows of opinion writers. In some cases, it comes directly through their computer screens and shows them how to help Americans claim their voices instead of abandoning them.
Your hand aches from the effort, but you keep it on Lady Liberty’s hand. You can see that your efforts are having an effect, As you watch, the fog is burning off the land, evaporating, blowing away like old smoke. When the haze disappears, everyone an see clearly, can make distinctions, can discern their way forward. American’s lose their cynicism and become enthusiastic about making change.
Lady Liberty turns to you and says, “Well done. The work is done and it is well done. Thank you, child.” You feel such a deep sense of accomplishment, pride, and — yes — awe. Did the Goddess just thank you??
Bid Her farewell and fly out of the banner back to your hillock on the astral plane.
Slowly, come down from your hillock and begin to walk back to your own landbase.
Open your eyes. Rub your arms and face. Notice the detail that you selected to call yourself back. Drink something, maybe some tea with milk and honey or a smoothie made from a pear, some blackberries, and parsley. Have something to eat, maybe a slice of havarti cheese or a warm bowl of oatmeal. Maybe you can set up a small altar dedicated to Lady Liberty. You may want to repeat this working several times this week. You may want to journal about it. Are you inspired to make any art? If you’re willing, please share in comments what happened and how this working went.
