Welcome (or welcome back)! We’ve been doing these weekly workings for nearly two years now. As you know, I’ve attempted to use Dion Fortune’s letters in The Magical Battle of Britain as a general example. Ms. Fortune wrote weekly for two years and then, as the war began to turn, began to write monthly. I’d like some feedback from you. Do you find it useful to have these workings posted weekly? Are you able to do one each week or would it be more realistic for them to be monthly? Do you feel that our tide has turned sufficiently to allow us to move to monthly workings (although of course, nothing would prevent you from doing the working each week of the month if you prefer)? Are there particular symbols and/or workings that you’ve found to be more effective than others? Do you use the symbols and/or methods in your own workings? I’d love to hear from you in comments.
Now’s probably a good time to remind everyone to check/refresh the wards on your home or wherever you do this work. (No, really. You really need to do this.) Be sure that you’re rested, grounded, and in a comfortable position. Maybe wrap up in a blanket or cloak and grasp an herb, stone, or talisman that matters to you. Grow your roots, send them deep into the soil, let them intertwine and grow small hairs to attach to the mycelia in your own landbase.
Anchor yourself firmly to your landbase. Does your landbase have anything to tell you today? Notice a small detail that will call you back when this working is finished.
Ground and center. Cast a circle.
As you move to our American plain on the astral plane, you can see again the safe hillock where you do your work. You can see the five giant banners, shining in the sky: Walden Pond, the Underground Railroad, the Cowboy, the Salmon, and Lady Liberty. Do they seem more defined since we began our work? Do they have anything special to tell you this week?
For a few moments, just sit on your hillock and allow yourself to become comfortable. This place should be feeling very real to you by now; we’ve been working together to create it for months and months. What’s become familiar to you? A tuft of prairie grass? Buffalo off in the distance? The scent of sand carried on the wind? You’ve been involved in a months-long magical working here, joined with magic workers from across the globe. Feel your connection to this place on the astral plane. It is always here for you, always a source of strength.
As you look to the Southeast, the banner for the Underground Railroad grows larger and larger until it fills the entire sky. While you watch, it becomes three-dimensional and you step into it, finding yourself inside a simple farmhouse. A tense family sits around the kitchen table, eating bread and soup in near-silence. You wander outside to the dairy barn and there, hidden under bales of hay, you see another family, formerly enslaved, hiding in terror. One family has risked everything to hide another family that is risking everything for freedom.
Your gaze shifts back to the farm kitchen. As the family members finish their meal, there is a loud knock on the door. A group of men burst in and begin to search everywhere. When the farmer objects, they tell him they have a right to search for escaped slaves, and to hang anyone caught harboring them. As they finish searching the house, one of the men peers out the door and sees the barn. “What’s in there?” he demands.
Both families are endangered, just as, today, both people of color and their allies are endangered.
You slip outside and create a disturbance, untying the men’s horses. When they run down the road to catch their horses, the farmwife goes out to milk the cows — and warn the hidden family. She hums a tune that tells them of the danger. They move off into the night, going the opposite direction from the evil men. Both families are safe.
Walk out of the Underground Railroad banner and back to your hillock of power. Lift your hand over the land and cast distractions in the way of all of Trump’s followers and evil-doers: the casual racists who abuse people of color who are shopping, driving, or working, ICE, the militarized police departments, and others. As they look away, cast a circle of protection over people of color and their allies. Perhaps you feel called to weave a cloak of invisibility and leave it where it will be needed most: at the border, outside a 7-11, inside a schoolroom, behind an iPhone recording what’s happening.
Slowly, come down from your hillock and begin to walk back to your own landbase.
Open your eyes. Rub your arms and face. Notice the detail that you selected to call yourself back. Drink something, maybe clear, cold water or a mug of steaming broth. Have something to eat, maybe a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts. Maybe you can set up a small altar dedicated to the Underground Railroad and the example it sets for us to work together. You may want to repeat this working several times this week. You may want to journal about it. Are you inspired to make any art? If you’re willing, please share in comments what happened and how this working went.
